Massively Fund all Public Education and Libraries

2003 August 7

This message was sent via MoveOn.org’s Save our Schools from Budget Disaster campaign to be compiled with others and delivered to key Congressional leaders, urging them to fund schools before cutting taxes.

Town schools and state colleges and universities are both with less money than they need to do a respectable job educating.  The University of Massachusetts, from which I am graduating, is pushing retirement on professors and not replacing them.  Local libraries, another important source of education and a way for people to better themselves culturally and in their economic prospects, have had their hours slashed.  Billions of dollars to schools, libraries, and universities would provide direct stimulus to the economy.  It will give people an avenue to develop new skills.  And it will produce scientific research on which long-term economic growth will inevitably be based.  Our schools need "tax relief" in the form of massive federal funding more than the rich or Iraq; let's give it now.
