In loving, living memory, John Melançon 1928 – 2007
Another piece of key PWGD strategy, from Nancy Davies look at the current situation of the social movements in Oaxaca, Mexico:
The failure to dislodge Ulises Ruiz has left the movement’s only organizing goals to consist of freeing prisoners and punishing the guilty. While these are essential, even noble goals, for the general public they don’t suffice as compensation for the miserable conditions of daily life. A more concrete goal, for example to repair roads or remove trash, might encourage more participation.
The need, again, for radical service organizations: immediate help for building better lives, a better society, but with a clear and constant critique of the underlying causes of the problems with which we're dealing.
(Side note: using the term PWGD, People Who Give a Damn, where I might have unthinkingly used "revolutionary strategy." Vafa's cured me of that. What process of change for the better has ever been completed through revolution as the primary strategy? And what meaning is there in claiming that the revolutionary process continues for decades after political power has been taken? It's simply the wrong word, especially since taking political power must never, ever be the primary goal.
But what word to use instead? JLP, for Justice, Liberty, and Progress/Peace/Prosperity? Doesn't quite flow. Co-opt evolutionary, and piss off both scientists and creationists while sounding like a business management fad? We're open to suggestion here!)
