Jen called here last night (2005 March 11) because she thought Jakob was getting arrested after they spun out passing a truck and crashed, missing the guard rail (apparently a good thing), into a ditch. Opie hit the windshield and was whining, Jakob and Jennifer both hurt their shoulders (were they actually buckled?). The car has to be towed and that will probably use up all their $200. The trooper (?), of course, was obnoxious about it, but the real question is why wasn't Jakob arrested if he doesn't have a license? He was in the police car giving his statement when Jen called.

Jakob later called the cell phone with Mom at the Cape and left the message that they had an accident and he might be calling about insurance information. Hmm.

I told Dad this morning. He called down some minutes later:

I remember when I was in the community there in Georgia, there was a couple trying to decide if they were going to stay. They were having trouble getting along with one another

getting in touch with us wasn't easy because we didn't have a phone
a telegram had to be sent to the cab company in town

I remember one of the members saying to me "the consequences of going alone... one of us in an accident like that is no big thing, because the whole community is there for them." And he was absolutely right, that made such an impression on me: the decision to go it alone.

That's why communism has such an appeal for good people, this sense of comradeship, helping one another out, solidarity and all that stuff.
