God as evolved beings, or not

How do I get pulled into this on a Sunday morning when I really need to be getting lots of work done?

Some excerpts from my end of the IM conversation about this, after Kathleen Murtagh sent at 9:58 a.m.

interesting philosophy: http://www.fullmoon.nu/articles/art.php?id=tal

I happen to think my autoreply – The Beginning is Near - http://mlncn.com/node/827 – was right on point, heh

But on actually reading it, some thoughts i wrote:

‘Seemed like a good idea at the time’ is MY philosophy and no one else can have it!

...

I've certainly never bothered to think much on the evolution of a species level, and even here the author is more using that as both a metaphor and call to action for what must be done as a society

But the idea that fusion power will "eliminate material inequalities and poverty within a generation or two" is one i laugh at, even as I endorse the notion that this equality is "an absolutely vital step for any maturing species"

It's not about fusion power, per se. It's that for a couple centuries now humanity has had the technical ability for everyone to have a good life and tremendous opportunity to contribute to the development of things that help the well-being of others, but we've completely lacked the social organization
basically I'm saying that I think for a while now our social organization has been holding back our technical progress, more than vice versa

and much of the thrust of this piece is the opposite
that, and the whole genetically engineering who we are thing scares the living daylights out of me, so i just don't think about it well

but it's more the potential of unleashing this technology in a horribly unfair and unequal world that scares me... people who already think they're superior will be claiming goddamn genetic engineering to justify it. Very likely wrongly for a hundred years or so anyway, but i fear another age of eugenics

Kathleen:

so, he goes on that the purpose of creating the "big bang" and "life" is that when God merges with another God it's great
however, you can only create a God through the effective merging of a species into one being
kinda weird, never thought along those lines. However, it's likely because I am a bit of an individualist
anywho... so my theory of God is more similar to the Indian Brahman... and also some high up theory of Pagan polytheism (it's amazing how people are losing this knowlege...)

have you followed my status message? heh

recent essay by my friend Sean Donahue about the pagan consciousnesses, the ancient consciousnesses, that have almost been destroyed but that we need now more than ever

i frankly don't get the point / mechanism / inspiration for merging into one being. I interpret the oneness idea of many religions / spiritual traditions somewhat differently, i guess. It's connection and harmony and richer more understanding communication among people and between people and nature, but not at the cost of individual identities. Humanity / society / species makes no sense as a merged entity. are your thoughts along those lines?

I see it that God is the "life force" of the universe... it serves many purposes, such as the glue between everything, connecting everything. Life takes a piece of God to be that life, while death sends that life force back to God to join it
the whole point is not ecstasy, but rather knowledge and experience

part one, check
knowledge and experience as ends in themselves, or towards some goal?

no, no goal
I suppose, entertainment value. Knowledge and gaining knowledge through others experiences is entertainment.

I'm good with that. I would throw enjoyment, specifically taking pleasure in / making pleasure with (and i'm not trying to just talk about sex here, heh) others

but i don't want to characterize any of that as entertainment
entertainment value is more than enough justification for life / living
but i'm looking for more in a philosophy to live by, heh
